hot water coming out of faucet

If you ever wonder about the quality of what’s coming out of your faucet, the nonprofit Environmental Working Group (EWG) has answers. The organization offers a free online nationwide Tap Water Database with records of 50,000 municipal utility companies: Simply enter your ZIP code and the site reveals pollutants found in your water — and the concerns they raise. Results are compared with EWG’s own strict standards on heavy metals, pesticides, fluoride, and other chemicals.

“EWG standards aren’t based on levels of contaminants that are acceptable or convenient to politicians and polluters or how much more it would cost utilities to clean those contaminants out of your water,” explains EWG president Ken Cook. “Instead, EWG standards are simply what the best science says will fully protect everyone’s health.”

To help you reduce your exposure, EWG also offers a handy guide to water filters at www.ewg.org/tapwater.

This originally appeared as “Clear Answers About What’s in Your Water” in the October 2020 print issue of Experience Life.
