Steamed Sweet Potatoes With Tamari Ginger Sauce

Steaming is a quick and healthful way to prepare sweet potatoes. This side dish is especially nice accompanied by buckwheat or Soba noodles and grilled meat or tofu.

Serves four

  • 3 sweet potatoes, cut crosswise into ¾-inch thick slices
  • Juice of one orange
  • 1 tbs. tamari
  • ½ tsp. fresh grated ginger root

Slice sweet potatoes and place in a single layer in a steamer basket. Steam over simmering water for 10 to 15 minutes, until just tender. Mix the orange juice, tamari and ginger root together in a small bowl. Drizzle sauce over the steamed sweet potato slices and serve hot, at room temperature, or chilled.

Why No Numbers?

Readers sometimes ask us why we don’t publish nutrition information with our recipes. We believe that (barring specific medical advice to the contrary) if you’re eating primarily whole, healthy foods — an array of sustainably raised vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, legumes, meats, fish, eggs, whole-kernel grains, and healthy fats and oils — you probably don’t need to stress about the numbers. We prefer to focus on food quality and trust our bodies to tell us what we need.  — The Editors
