What to Try Now: Little Free Library

Little Free Libraries are sharing books, improving literacy, and fostering community worldwide.

Want to promote literacy and foster community? Build your own neighborhood library!

Margret Aldrich chronicles the movement that began in 2009 with the simple concept of “take a book, return a book” in The Little Free Library Book, which includes photos, helpful how-tos, and professional blueprints.

Kits and preassembled libraries — available from Little Free Library — range from $270 to $1,500, but many of the more than 25,000 LFLs worldwide are DIY-constructions inspired by robots, animals, or architecture style — from rustic barns to Victorian mansions.

Regardless of design, the burgeoning campaign indicates that a little library makes a big impact.
