While visiting with my friend and her children today, I learned two things:
- Don’t put anything past a 3-and-a-half-year-old: My friend’s son smartly called raisins “nature’s candy” when asked by his mom. This kid is sharp.
- The DJ on the classical station of Minnesota Public Radio sure knows how to bring a girl down.
The classical station was playing softly in the background as my friend’s son slept, and the DJ commented on the end of summer. “Perhaps you’re feeling a bit wistful this Labor Day evening,” he said. Well, I wasn’t, but I am now!
I supposed it did cross my mind as our family puttered around the lake at the cabin during Labor Day weekend. Or on the drive back as I noticed a few trees with brown-tinged leaves warmed by the setting sun. But, it’s over? Already? Wasn’t it May just a few weeks ago?
Although I enjoy fall the most for reasons I outlined in yesterday’s post, I do grow a bit pensive at the change of seasons for the simple fact that I feel unaccomplished. Another season come and gone, and yet, what did I actually do? (Yes, both Joni Mitchell’s and John Lennon’s holiday-linked anthems make me weep each December. Come to think of it, Joni Mitchell’s haunting voice and guitar solos makes me weep any ol’ time.)
This summer we moved, we relaxed at the cabin, we got organized and cut the clutter, and we — including our pets — acclimated to our new home. I ran a 5K, and several times I seriously considered another detox to pair with the Nutritional Response Testing I started (more on that to come; as for the detox, I’m starting that on Sunday). I shook up my workout routine by, well, giving myself a break, and started charting a new plan for the fall. And I tried a few new recipes with ingredients from a newly discovered farmers’ market.
