Pilar is Experience Life‘s founding editor and has served as its editor in chief since its inception. Pilar also serves as Life Time Fitness’s Vice President of Education.

Long interested in health, wellness and the underpinnings of a satisfying, purpose-centered life, Pilar came to the world of publishing somewhat indirectly. Raised by a sociologist father and a back-to-the-land mother, she grew up between liberal-arts-college campuses and a Midwestern organic farm.

She attended a rural four-room grade school and an urban alternative public high school, then studied comparative literature and French at a California women’s college. After graduating, she taught in Paris on a Fulbright scholarship, before returning to the Twin Cities, where she turned her attention to the more businesslike worlds of marketing, advertising and custom publishing.

Prior to her work with Experience Life and Life Time Fitness, Pilar was editor in chief of ICON, the magazine of the American Society of Interior Designers. She also served as executive editor at Hanley-Wood Custom Publishing, where she worked on creative marketing, branding and custom-publishing projects for FedEx, among other corporate clients.

Pilar has an abiding passion for broad and constant learning. A natural public speaker and a vibrant presence on both radio and TV, Pilar presents and speaks on diverse topics — from emotional fitness, life balance and natural wellness to sustainability and various aspects of the “Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability” (LOHAS) marketplace.

Today, Pilar lives with her husband, Zack, and their dog, Frida, on a cooperative family farm in Western Wisconsin. When she’s not working, she runs, lifts weights, practices yoga, plays guitar and chairs her local town board. She’s proud to be a member of her local food co-op.

Pilar holds a BA with honors in comparative literature from Mills College in Oakland, Calif. She is a member of the American Society of Magazine Editors and serves on the Advisory Board of the University of Minnesota’s Health Journalism program.

You can hear from Pilar online in her regular Thoughts From the Editor column and in our podcasts section. Learn more about her thoughts on Experience Life and other health publications in her essay, “Six Packs & Sex Lives.”
