Each month, Life Time Kids puts on creative and engaging themed events for kids during Parents Night Out. This series details how you can re-create those activities in your own home. (Looking for more ideas? Try this Super Builder Challenge or this Superhero Party.)

Spring has sprung! Celebrate the season of brighter colors, more sunshine, and fresh blooms with these themed crafts and games. Pick one or try them all, depending on what supplies you have.

Colorful Spring Crafts

Construction Paper Frogs

What you’ll need:

  • Bright green construction paper (if available, dark and light sheets)
  • Red construction paper
  • Black marker
  • Googly eyes (optional)
  • Scissors
  • Glue

Directions:

  1. Take a piece of bright green construction paper, and cut it into two strips — one wider than the other — starting on the shorter side (if you’re using 8.5-by-11-inch paper, cut from the 8.5 inch side). Shorten the thinner strip by about one inch and save the trimmed off piece (you’ll use it later).
  2. Add glue to the end of each strip to make each into a roll. Glue the smaller loop on top of the larger roll.
  3. Grab the piece of paper you trimmed off, and add your eyes on top of the trimmed off piece — either draw them on, or glue on googly eyes. Cut to make arches above each eye, then fold the bottom of this piece just enough so there’s an edge you can glue on top of the smaller top roll.
  4. On the top roll, below the eyes, draw on a nose and mouth. Cut a long, thin red strip of paper for the frog’s tongue. Roll the bottom of the tongue into a curl and glue the top of the tongue to the frog’s mouth.
  5. From another piece of bright green construction paper, cut a thin strip of bright green paper. Then, cut that strip in half to create your frog’s legs and glue each leg to the bottom of your frog. Do the same thing to make arms for your frog, this time using slightly longer strips of paper.
  6. Cut a circle out of the dark green construction paper. Then, cut a small triangle out of the front of the circle to make the lily pad leaf. Use glue to adhere the frog to the lily pad.

Handprint Flower Bookmarks

What you’ll need:

  • Popsicle sticks
  • Paint (optional)
  • Scissors
  • Foam craft sheets or construction paper
  • Glue
  • Markers

Directions:

  1. Paint the popsicle sticks green. If you don’t have paint at home, coloring with markers works, too.
  2. While the popsicle sticks dries, trace your child’s hand on their desired color of construction or foam paper and cut it out.
  3. Cut out a leaf shape from green construction or foam paper. Glue the cut-out handprint to the top of the popsicle stick, then glue the leaf to the middle of the stick.

Colorful Spring Games

What you’ll need:

  • Balloons
  • Cones (optional)
  • Painters tape (optional)

Don’t Let the Balloon Touch the Ground

Give each person a balloon filled with air. Have everyone toss their balloon in the air at the same time and see who can keep theirs in the air the longest without letting it touch the ground. The rules are simple: The balloon cannot be held and needs to be in the air at all times. Players are allowed to hit the balloon with their hand in order to keep it in the air for longer.

Penguin Waddle Relay Race

This game can be played with a lot of players or with just one — race against each other or race against the clock! Simply place a balloon between the knees of your child and have them waddle to the other end of the room, keeping the balloon between their knees the entire way. You can time one player to see how fast they can waddle, or turn it into a relay if you have multiple players.

If you make it a relay, have the player transfer the balloon to the next player after waddling to one end of the room — without using his or her hands. If the balloon falls while the child is waddling, they must pick up the balloon, return to the start and begin their journey again.

For an additional challenge, set up cones for players to weave through when going in one direction. To make it more challenging, have them weave as they go down and back.

Head-to-Head Relay

Have two players face each other, then place a balloon between their foreheads. Players cannot use their hands to adjust the balloon. Have each set of two players race to the other side of the room. If the balloon falls, the team must return to the start line and begin again.

Balloon Blow

Using cones or painters’ tape (or another marker if you don’t have either), set up a course and see if players can each blow a balloon along the course all the way to the finish line. Players cannot use their hands along the way, and if they do, they must return to the start and begin again.
