What living a healthy life means to me: I’m a traditionalist when it comes to food and nutrition; I am not into trends or the next big diet or nutrition theory. I love foods in their whole, natural state, as locally-produced and as in season as possible and purchasing from local farmers is really important to me. But being healthy is not all about the foods we eat. Managing stress in a healthful way is equally significant, so I try not to let myself get overscheduled or worked into a frenzy. Gratefulness plays a huge role in stress abatement, and giving thanks is a big part of my daily life. It’s unfortunate to me that many people are simply focused on food for their nourishment – the trap of “nutritionism,” as Michael Pollan calls is. Understanding that health is not just about food has changed my life and the lives of my clients.
My healthy living goals for the next year: I will say “no” to more things, be more intentional about my deep breathing practice, get more toned, and start knitting again.
Five unexpected things about me:
1. I am a classic country music aficionado.
2. I was on MTV in 1988.
3. Despite what I do for a living, I’m not the best meal planner.
4. I gave up the possibility of becoming a professional pianist to get a degree in architecture.
5. I have a fascination with big rig/trucker culture.
